About ISO 45001

The most recent international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) is ISO 45001. It was created in Geneva by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, to assist businesses around the world in their efforts to establish a healthy and safe workplace. ISO 45001 will standardize global occupational health and safety management systems, easing global trade and boosting business and the global economy. The most recent version of ISO 45001 is ISO 45001:2018.

Key Elements of ISO 45001

ISO 45001:2018 integrates additional management system elements related to occupational health and safety while combining the technical standards of ISO 9001 with the process approach of ISO 14001. ISO 45001 establishes a standardized risk-based approach to occupational health and safety management. ISO 45001 takes one step further than ISO 9001 by focusing on continuous improvement of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) performance, which includes adopting effective OH&S solutions that are proportional to the ISO 45001 certified organizations’ identified hazards and risks.

Which Organizations Can Implement ISO 45001 Standards?

The ISO 45001:2018 standards were created with a variety of industries in mind. It does not take into account the size, type, or field of activity of the organization. ISO 45001 certification is recommended for all enterprises, but especially for those looking to apply a global standard for workplace health and safety. Furthermore, certain RFPs or RFQs may require (or at least recommend) contract conformity to the standard. Going above and beyond to achieve ISO 45001 certification may prove to be very beneficial to your firm.

ISO 45001 Certification

ISO 45001 certification verifies that ISO standards are being followed in the workplace to address issues including risk assessment, accident investigation, safety information, worker training, and contact with internal and external stakeholders. Obtaining ISO 45001 certification displays your commitment to your employees’ health and well-being, as well as your commitment to continuous safety improvement. Overall, ISO 45001 is a global certification standard with an increased focus on prevention. This standard serves as a model for organizations looking to set the bar high for Oh&S management.

Process of ISO 45001 Certification

The ISO 45001 certification procedure begins with your company putting in place an effective OHSMS and conducting internal audits to document the system’s processes in detail. Then, to conduct external audits of your OHSMS, you can hire a third-party certification authority. After a successful audit and the resolution of any non-conformities, the certifying authority will give your company ISO 45001 certification. Certification audits for ISO 45001 are based on a risk-based approach, with a complete checklist of over 100 items that are matched to ISO 45001 standards.
